In 2012 we published Purple Reign, Sexual Abuse and Abuse of Power in the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey; the book set off a tsunami of negative reaction from the then sitting Bishops of the five New Jersey Catholic dioceses via their mouthpieces within their Communications offices. The authors were called "fabricators who no one should take seriously" and "opportunists looking to make money off victims while feeding the enemies of the Church." Fast forward to 2018, all five dioceses were forced to disclose the lists of credibly accused religious and each and every person named in Purple Reign, who the dioceses of Trenton, Newark and Metuchen denied as predators in 2012, appeared on those lists.
The cover-up should have ended there, sadly it didn't and to this day, hasn't.
The Reign Reports mission is simple: to outline and objectively inform the public on the continued efforts of the five New Jersey dioceses and their insurance companies attempt to victim-shame, cover-up and stonewall payments to the legitimate victims of clergy sexual abuse.
The details within this site are true, as are the details in the 443 pages/ 160,000+ words that made up Purple Reign. There are contributors from national newspapers here and there is commentary; I can assure the reader, I know what I am talking about. What the Reign Report is not, is a witch hunt, what these powerful and influential people have created, through their actions and in-actions are of their own doing and under the belief that their deeds are in the best interest of the Church and therefore irreproachable and should remain, without questions asked, from the faithful.
They were wrong then, and they are paying now.
At a glance, we have an American that held a citizenship in Peru, but okay, sure, he's an American by birthright. Leo is a graduate of Villanova and mosty a career Vatican diplomat and missionary. His views are conservative as far as doctrine are concerned (sorry, ladies, there will be no ordinations anytime soon - better luck with the next guy) but his stance on migrants rights and the environment are progressive and very much in line with Francis' which played big into him being named a cardinal (because we all know, if you disagreed with Francis, your career was dead-on-arrival).
To me, views on plastic bags and styrofoam cups from Church leadership do not even register on my "what matters most" barometer - what does matter is how the hierarchy addresses the sexual abuse (rape) of children and abuse of women and Leo-14 does not make the grade.
As reported today on the BBC and in the Jerusalem Post, Cardinal Prevost missed the mark in Illinois and Peru. In Chicago Prevost paid $2,000,000 to settle a case against Father Richard McGrath (a Catholic School president) who also had child pornography on his phone as reported in the Chicago Sun Times yet Prevost kept McGrath at his post and did not include him on the credibly accused list when subpoenaed.
While in Peru, three nuns accused a priest of rape, went to Prevost to issue a complaint and were assured that an internal investigation would take place, it never did - the priest remains in "good standing" with the RCC.
So, today is a day to celebrate? I can think of at least one man and three nuns who aren't.
